Last Words

He said, I think I will put them in a song
so they’ll echo centuries after I’m gone.

He said, or I’ll say them so only I can hear
and people will speculate for thousands of years.

He said, soon enough, I’ll tell you my name
(life still owes me my fifteen seconds of fame).

He said, I’ve been planning it since my own Pa died
I reckon I’ll wait until the last moment to decide.

He said, my life wasn’t much, but that’s okay
because no one can forget me when, on my deathbed, I say
